This is controlled by the “Tell me if Microsoft Word isn’t the default program for viewing and editing documents” option at File tab Options General.

If you run multiple versions of Office or if you have some other word processing package installed, you can choose to clear the option. Alternatively, uninstall the “other” products, including older versions of Office, and then run a repair.

Tried to find document apps to reset but God only knows what all those might be. Done the full reinstall fixing efforts. Etc etc Still this message pops up every time and all the Word files on the computer show an icon for files which have no association.

Of course i’ve gone to properties several times and they are set to Word as defult. But no success to get the icons back or stop the annoying popup. It is incredible that still after some 40 years Microsoft can’t figure out how to avoid screwing up their own programs with their own patches and updates and extension packs. Truly shocking. It’s like the old days when a windows update would corrupt the entire OS and you lose everything.

Still today they can’t get it right. Does anybody out there have some idea how to simply reset Word to be the default? They have created some rediculous loop of things that can’t be done. If only the companies I have to work with weren’t dependent on Microsoft I could leave this flawed system forever!! I recommend that you remove all trial versions desktop and mobile versions, if you have both. In addition, if you have third-party word processors, such as LibreOffice Writer, it may “compete” with Office over file associations.

Uninstall LibreOffice as well, assuming that you are not using it, of course. Note that whenever you install a language accessory pack, it is normal for Office to add a second entry in the list of installed programs there will be one entry for each installed language. This is not going to cause any trouble with file associations.
