I haven’t had any feedback on this post? I am confused on dynamic simulation a little, I want to simulate groups of objects and how they react in a given situation.

The video clip I have pointed out is a really good example of a skittle alley and how the skittles react when hit with the ball and in this situation the boundary walls of the alley are increased in height to stop the skittles flying off.

In the video clip all the items are selected together and a contact setting is used in one click of a button. I have only recently upgraded to simulation in inventor but from what I can make out I have to set a spatial joint and a 3d contact for every part in connection with every other part, this means if I have around 10 parts in the assembly I would need to set around settings to make this work???

Also when setting to spatial joints I am setting a face, a datum and an axis but in this type of simulation I would of thought the key settings is the centre of gravity, the shape and the weight of the object, all of which are known in the object so inventor should be able to work out 3d contacts simply by selecting the objects together and then turning on 3d contacts.

I only know a little Spanish, but I think the simulation is showing gravity the ball and contacts similar to an Inventor contact set. You will notice that the pins do not bounce properly when they hit another object they stop.

This is very similar to the Inventor contact set tools introduced in Inventor version 8 a long, long time ago. In inventor dynamic simulation, the pins could be set to bounce, however, that requires more work. With Inventor dynamic simulation, you can get a better simulation effect with additional work than this video shows. You can multi-select assembly components for a contact set by using either the Ctrl key, or the Shift key in true Windows selection fashion.

Contact sets don’t carry through to simulation? To make objects free fall gravity needs turning on and a spatial joint needs setting to give the object movement, Also when setting up a spatial joint this requires a component face or edge, a datum and an axis and really for an object to behave as in a real environment it should work of the centre of gravity, the weight, friction and the shape of the object all of these things are already set when the object is created in inventor so it should be carried through into the dynamic sim environment.

I know the same sort of simulation is capable in inventor, but based on your demo you can see the work involved. Just looking at all the contacts and joints you have made and that is based on the contact of the ball and the pins, you haven’t set the contacts of each pin with each other so the pins travel through them selves.

This would be a couple of hundred settings to get it all to work. In the video clip I listed it is one selection and one click to set the contacts. This also brings me onto another question, how do you make balls or spheres roll? Your ball slides, I put a quick hole through it off centre and the ball doesn’t spin at all? If a spatial joint is set on a cube because it has edges then when it contacts other objects it will tumble is hit correctly, but how does the spatial joint work on a ball?

As Ravi mentioned, there is already to have a window-select to add 3D contacts joints That said, there is a way to make it easier in creating the spatial joint s.

Instead of manually creating them, you can use the DS command “Convert Constraints”. This way you can have the component remain in-place. In order to make a ball roll using 3D contact, friction needs a non-zero value in the joint properties. In this scenario the parts are not constrained they are free in space so they can fall and react with the environment. If you constrain them then they will not behave naturally? In the solidworks demo video clip you can see a good example of how this is used, the skittles when hit fall off the alley but when the sides are increased in height they don’t.

This clip shows a quick and simple way to set the contacts and the user can quickly define a solution based on the effect shown in the video. I am not saying that inventor dynamic simulation is not good or accurate, the point is if it isn’t easy to use nobody will use it.

This particular type of simulation doesn’t rely on constraints much it is all about contacts, gravity, weight etc.. And this should not be complicated to set up.

I am using the bowling alley video clip as a really good example of how contacts need to be used. The wishlist would definitely make it easier to set up the simulation.

I believe you’d need to define 71 3D contacts:. It’s do-able, but I agree it is a pain to set up. Hopefully one day we can have the window select wish-list fulfilled. In some cases, you may not need all the 3D contacts. For example, pin 2 may never come in contact with pin The real strength of DS is not animating motion, but is how it computes real forces, velocity, etc.

The pins will be more than 50 contacts: each pin needs a contact set up for the other 9 so it is approx contacts just for the pins. The point in simulation is to simulate the potential actions, so to have to think about one pin wouldn’t hit another is not really a good idea.

This isn’t about a graphic simulation but simulating designs and how they might react. I think the video clip is an excellent sample of how a design could be simulated and adapted based on the outcome of the simulation. The contacts should be easier to set up.

I use Inventor to design solutions, I m not a physics master but I would like to be able to test my designs simply, we need a better contact solution in this environment. I worked out a formula for the contacts needed for n number of bodies to contact each other:. For ten pins, there are 45 needed not 50 as I said earlier.

I modified Ravi’s dataset so that it has all 45 contacts attached. If you try to add any more contacts between pins, DS will message that the contact already exists. I totally agree it is a setup issue that increases as a square of the number of bodes. After a certain point it becomes unmanageable. We cannot say when this will be addressed, but 3D contact joint creation does work well up to a tolerable point.

I’ve updated the wish list item with reference to this thread in hopes that it may get more attention. Also I am still not sure that the contacts are working correctly! The contact needs to be based on the centre of gravity, the weight and shape of each object.

The 3d contact setup needs to be more free form based on each object not to set points or planes etc.. Also I think that the basic environment needs changing: when in simulator all the parts are grounded to start with and then joints etc..

Are created, I realize that you can bring constraints from assembly but what I think should happen is that nothing should be grounded unless it is set up so that when you enter simulation and turn gravity on anything not fixed or constrained in assembly will just fall down.

This is what I thought intially too. However, I imagine the solver in DS is much more complex and powerful than the assembly constraint solver. The large number of open degrees of freedom would bog down the DS solver more than it would if only the necessary bodies are mobile.

By giving all ungrounded components spatial joints automatically, most likely you would also to go and lock down DOFs in all those spatial joints to get the correct joint relationships if in a mechanism unless you are only interested in simulating freely falling bodies. If each mobile body had a spatial joint, they would still be passing though each other until you create contact joints.
